The Problem
EC Electric was contacted for an estimate to replace a 100-amp service that was in unsafe condition, worsened by the homeowner pressure washing his home before listing it for sale. The jacket of the SEU cable was completely deteriorated and unsafe. The meter box itself was also in poor condition.
The Solution
EC Electric provided an estimate within 48 hours, and proved to be more cost-effective than another estimate the homeowner received. The customer already had a better impression of our company and was happy to accept our estimate. We coordinated with CMP (the utility company) to come out quickly and scheduled their appointment for the following week.
We installed a PVC riser instead of using the exposed SEU cable, preventing the same issue from recurring in the future. A Milbank 100-amp main breaker combination meter was installed, ensuring the power can be shut off quickly in case of an emergency. The main panel of the home was also replaced with a Siemens 100-amp 30 circuit panel. All breakers installed were new.
During the installation, we discovered that some of the outlets in the home were improperly installed and did not have an equipment grounding conductor. This is an unsafe condition because if there is a short circuit in a metal appliance, without the equipment ground, there’s no way for the circuit breaker to open. To address this safety issue, we installed GFCI devices. This proactive measure not only ensured the safety of the home’s electrical system but also potentially saved the customer time, frustration, and money by avoiding issues on a home inspection report.
